![]() Robson includes details to flesh out the future ecology of Western Canada, and though there are certainly elements of dysfunction and ecological degradation, landscape is technologically managed. Hints of dystopia exist in the mention of Bangladesh Hell and Sudbury Hell: ecologically degraded environments which likewise degrade their inhabitants’ bodies and minds. ![]() Robson’s futuristic Canada is divided into “habs” - habitations which include the hybrid habs of Jasper which the healthy and prosperous young people (the “fat babies”) built when they left Calgary, the gleaming Tuktoyaktuk hab on the MacKenzie Delta, and the Edmontonian ghost town. The first thing a reader notices is the richness of that world. Robson’s novella, Gods Monsters and the Lucky Peach, does fit into the mandate of the press in that its technological focus is also ecological and its narrative acknowledges the ways that these two elements interact in Robson’s world. ![]() Gods, Monsters, and the Lucky Peach was published in 2018 by Tor ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments Fallen rapture![]() ![]() If we have believed in Jesus, we know that those who have died in Christ have eternal life and that they are with Him, for to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6–8), and that He will bring them with Him when He returns (1 Thessalonians 4:14). Even in grief the believer has hope, as Paul explains in the next few verses. Paul is not suggesting the Thessalonians should not grieve at all rather, he wants them to grieve, but not without hope. ![]() Grief is a normal, natural response to the loss we experience when someone dies-even Jesus grieved when He saw the pain associated with Lazarus’ death (John 11:35). Paul begins the section noting that he did not want the Thessalonians to be ignorant about those who had fallen asleep (i.e., died in Christ) so that they would not grieve as those who have no hope grieve (1 Thessalonians 4:13). In that section of chapter 4, we may ask, “What does it mean that the dead in Christ shall rise first” (1 Thessalonians 4:16)? He commends them for their faith, love, and hope (1 Thessalonians 1:3) but acknowledges that he wants them to have more knowledge regarding their hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). ![]() In Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, he writes to commend the Thessalonians and to encourage them to excel still more (1 Thessalonians 4:1 and 10). ![]() 6/30/2023 0 Comments Plato the republic![]() The best warriors will get to sleep with the most beautiful women. Less amusing is the proposed power of Socrates’ enlightened guardians to “breed” men and women as breeders selectively mate horses, dogs or fighting birds. When Socrates suggests that justice is only possible if philosophers become kings, or kings philosophers, his young companion Glaucon jokes that most people on hearing this will probably reach for their weapons. The third class are craftspeople and traders more recognisable to us today. Indeed, Socrates depicts men and women as absolutely equal in all decisive senses. The second class will be “auxiliaries” or soldiers who will share everything in common, including wives and children. On top will be a ruling caste of (yes) philosopher-guardians.
